AI Reality Check: Regional Leaders Explore the Future of Data-Driven Government
More than 120 public-sector professionals from across the Kansas City region gathered on October 21, 2025 at the Kauffman Center for the Data & Digital Summit, hosted by the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC), to explore how artificial intelligence and advanced data analytics can support more informed decision-making in local government.

UMKC’s Data Science and Analytics Innovation Center (dSAIC) and the UMKC Office of Commercialization led one of the summit’s most popular breakout sessions, AI Reality Check: Turning Data Into Decisions You Can Trust, with 45 participants attending. The interactive session challenged city and county leaders, IT and GIS professionals, and analysts to separate AI “hallucinations” from trustworthy outputs, apply validation frameworks to real-world scenarios, and explore how multimodal data tools can improve services ranging from emergency response to infrastructure planning.

The event highlighted both the promise and the practical realities of AI in the public sector — emphasizing the importance of verification, collaboration, and context when applying emerging technologies to civic challenges. Attendees left with actionable tools for evaluating AI outputs and a clearer understanding of how resources like dSAIC can support future municipal innovation efforts.
